What is Eucalyptus?

Eucalyptus doesn’t describe just one type of tree; it's the name assigned to a genus, or family of trees, of which there are nearly 800 species.

Eucalyptus trees are iconic to Australia, and most species are native there, though a few outliers are native to nearby islands like Guinea, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Eucalyptus trees in general, are hardy, can grow in low moisture environments, and are resilient to wildfires and wind storms.

Their height (the tallest tree behind the Acacia genus) underscores their strength and cultural importance.

Rasasvada’s Black Ginger features the Eucalyptus globulus, also known as Bluegum. This species is common in California, Spain, Portugal, Chile, and other countries around the world and is often the species used for medicinal purposes.

Bluegum eucalyptus has yellow-whitish flowers that bloom for part of or all of the year, depending on where they are grown. The flowers can be used for honey production, while their woody fruits are inedible.

The Health Benefits of Eucalyptus

1. Antioxidant Rich

Natural sources of antioxidants are an important part of a healthy diet. Antioxidants help keep cells healthy, and diets rich in antioxidants are linked to better health outcomes. 

The leaves of eucalyptus offer high amounts of types of antioxidants called phenolic acids and flavonoids. These include compounds such as quercetin, rutin, and ellagic acid— all of which have been studied for their benefits to human health. 

The best way to reap the benefits of the antioxidants found in eucalyptus is through the leaves, which can be steeped into tea or pressed into beverages.  

2. Aids In Respiratory Health

Treating cold and cough is one of the most well-known traditional uses of eucalyptus, and scientists are just beginning to understand its healing potential.

A recent review of randomized controlled trials or RTCs (these are considered the gold standard of clinical research), found that eucalyptus oil helped to relieve symptoms of cold and cough better than a placebo. 

While encouraging, researchers are interpreting these findings cautiously, given that the sizes of these RCTs were small, and many had a high risk of bias (meaning that the results of the study may overestimate the true benefits of eucalyptus). 

To better understand if eucalyptus is effective, researchers need to figure out why it might be effective.  It's likely that eucalyptus helps relieve cold symptoms because it can help thin out mucus, expand airways, and support the lining in the nose that keeps out pathogens. This is thanks to compounds in eucalyptus that have anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties.

3. Supports Balanced Inflammation

Inflammation can be a good thing-- it helps the body fight infection during a cold, repair tissue if you get a deep cut, or heal a broken bone. Too much inflammation, though, in the wrong place and over time, can damage cells and DNA, ultimately leading to disease. Our bodies, when healthy, do a good job at balancing inflammation, but outside factors such as stress and diet can throw off this delicate balance. 

Researchers have found that eucalyptus may help ease inflammation. This is likely, in large part, due to an important compound found in eucalyptus called eucalyptol (scientifically it's called 1,8-cineole). One study found that eucalyptus oil calmed inflammation in rats exposed to carrageenan (a known source of inflammation).

While scientists agree that eucalyptus has anti-inflammatory effects, the extent of these effects and their specific effect on human health is still being studied.

4. Promotes Relaxation

Eucalyptus is often used in aromatherapy and more recently in beverages because of its potential to promote relaxation. One study found that a drink containing eucalyptus essential oil significantly decreased salivary cortisol (a stress hormone) when compared to a placebo. However, the same study found no changes in participants' reported mood states. This was a small study, but one of the only ones that has examined the effects of eucalyptus drinks in humans.

Researchers attribute eucalyptus’ potential calming effects to one of its main chemical components, eucalyptol. Eucalyptol’s anti-inflammatory properties may act on pathways in the central nervous system (which is responsible for cognitive processing and the bodies fight or flight response). More than this, eucalyptol may block an enzyme that can harm neurotransmitters. This is especially interesting to researchers looking at treatments for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. 

5. Pain Management

Aromatherapy is becoming a more commonplace treatment for pain (both chronic and acute) because it is low-risk and generally considered effective. 

Eucalyptus oil specifically may be a good option for those experiencing everyday aches and pains or for acute events such as childbirth or surgery, according to a recent review. The review (published in 2024) analyzed the results of 10 human studies that examined the effect of eucalyptus oil on pain. Nine out of the 10 studies found positive results, linking topical eucalyptus oil, aromatherapy, and eucalyptus supplements to a reduction in perceived pain for a number of conditions and situations.

Researchers theorize that eucalyptus works by reducing inflammation and acting on the central nervous system (similar to how it may help reduce anxiety).

While these results are certainly promising, researchers are still figuring out the best way to administer eucalyptus oil to ease pain safely.

History and Traditional Uses

Eucalyptus trees grow all over the world, and eucalyptus oil is among the 18 most globally traded essential oils. But before eucalyptus made its way to commercial plantations, it was (and still is) a tree with great cultural significance to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of Australia.

The First People of Australia used eucalyptus in traditional medicine for its antiseptic qualities, to treat digestive ailments and colds, and to manage pain. Typically, a tonic would be made out of gum mixed with water or crushed leaves soaked in water. 

Beyond medicinal uses, eucalyptus leaves are also ingrained in spiritual practices. The First People burn the leaves in what are referred to as smoking ceremonies, where the leaves are burned, and the smoke is waved as a type of spiritual cleansing and ritual for good health. 

Given that the eucalyptus is one of the most widespread trees in Australia, the wood was often used for crafting different tools such as canoes, spears, shields, and instruments (like the iconic didgeridoo). 

In the 1850’s, eucalyptus trees started making their way across the globe, and today they are one of the most widely planted genera, boasting environmental and medicinal value. 

It's no surprise, then, that this tree has caught the attention of researchers who suspect eucalyptus leaves have extensive health benefits.
